Head protection
When the task requires itUse task-rated head protection for impact, falling objects, climbing or electrical exposure. Keep the retention system adjusted and secure.
Material, limit & replacement
UV, heat, solvents and repeated impacts age shells and harnesses.
A cap or hood is not a safety helmet. Do not drill, paint or modify a helmet unless the manufacturer permits it.
After a significant impact, cracks, brittle shell, damaged harness or the manufacturer replacement point.
Eyes & face
Match the exposureUse rated spectacles, goggles or a face shield for impact, dust, splash, chips, optical radiation or hot particles. A face shield normally supplements eye protection.
Material, limit & replacement
Lens material and coating determine impact resistance, chemical compatibility, fogging and scratch life.
Ordinary prescription or sunglasses do not replace task-rated protection.
When vision is distorted or the lens is deeply scratched, cracked, loose or chemically attacked.
Hearing
Noise-dependentChoose plugs or earmuffs for the assessed noise and wear them for the whole exposure. Correct fit matters as much as the nominal rating.
Material, limit & replacement
Cushions harden, headbands lose force and reusable plugs collect dirt.
Too little protection damages hearing; too much can hide warning signals. Follow the workplace noise plan.
Replace damaged cushions, deformed plugs or weak headbands.
Breathing protection
Hazard-specificUse the correct respirator/filter only when the hazard, concentration, fit and change schedule are known. Facial hair must not break the seal of a tight-fitting mask.
Material, limit & replacement
Filter media saturates; seals age from ozone, oils, UV, heat and cleaning chemicals.
A dust mask is not universal protection against gases, vapours, oxygen deficiency or unknown atmospheres.
According to the filter schedule, breathing resistance, contamination, damage or manufacturer instructions.
Work top / jacket
Daily baselineFor welding, cutting or heavy sparks use flame-resistant, non-melting workwear with closed collar/cuffs and no pockets that collect hot particles.
Material, limit & replacement
Abrasion-resistant woven fabric is a practical baseline. Heat, flame, arc, chemicals, static or rain can require a certified garment system.
Avoid loose drawstrings and dangling accessories. Many ordinary synthetics can melt at high heat.
Retire when seams, closures or fabric no longer protect, or contamination cannot be safely removed.
Hands / gloves
Only when gloves improve safetyUse close-fitting handling gloves for sharp stock and process-specific heat/welding gloves where needed. Never let bulky gloves approach rotating spindles.
Material, limit & replacement
Leather, coated textiles, cut-resistant fibres, nitrile/neoprene and insulating materials fail differently. Chemical breakthrough time and dexterity matter.
Loose gloves can be pulled into rotating machinery. For drills, lathes, shafts and similar equipment follow the machine-specific no-glove rule where applicable.
Replace on cuts, holes, coating delamination, chemical swelling/hardening, loss of grip or contamination.
Work trousers / leg protection
Task-shaped fitUse durable trousers with free knee movement and pockets that do not catch. Add kneepads, cut protection or heat/splash protection only for the exposure that needs it.
Material, limit & replacement
Reinforced woven fabric tolerates abrasion; waterproof membranes reduce breathability; cut/heat layers add bulk and can trap heat.
Very baggy trousers, dangling loops and overloaded pockets increase snag and trip risk.
Repair or replace torn knees, failed closures, exposed protective inserts or contamination that changes protection.
Footwear
Stable before fancyChoose stable footwear with grip for the actual surface, secure heel hold and enough toe space. Add toe, penetration, ankle, chainsaw, electrical or chemical protection only where the task calls for it.
Material, limit & replacement
Rubber compounds change grip with oil, mud, cold and wear. Leather and membranes need drying/care; some chemicals attack soles and uppers.
A hard toe cap alone does not make a shoe suitable for ladders, roofs, electrical work or slippery floors.
Replace when tread is worn smooth, sole separates, upper is cut through, structure collapses or protective parts are damaged.
Hot work
For welding/cutting select flame-resistant clothing, process-specific gloves and eye/face protection; close openings where sparks can lodge.
Hard limit: Ordinary fleece, polyester and open cuffs can worsen a burn event.Nothing should surprise the machine.
- No loose cords, scarf ends, dangling badges or open cuffs near moving equipment.
- Long hair and beard accessories stay secured outside the machine/tool path.
- Remove rings, bracelets, necklaces and exposed metal jewellery wherever snag, crush, heat or electrical risk exists.
- Pockets carry only what stays secure when you bend, climb or crawl.
- PPE is the last protective layer, not a substitute for guarding, isolation, extraction, safe access or a correct procedure.
Before the first cut, lift or switch-on.
- ✓Nothing loose can reach a rotating, moving or hot part.
- ✓Gloves match the task — and are removed where entanglement risk is greater.
- ✓Eye/face, hearing and breathing protection are clean, undamaged and correctly fitted.
- ✓Footwear has grip; laces/closures are secured; sole and upper are intact.
- ✓Required high-visibility, helmet, fall protection or specialist PPE is on before entering the exposure.
- ✓Damaged or contaminated protective equipment is replaced — not used one more time.
Reduce unnecessary layers, use breathable task-compatible fabrics and plan hydration/shade, but never remove required protective layers just to cool down.
Layer moisture management, insulation and weather shell without bulky cuffs or lost grip. Dry footwear and gloves fully between shifts.
Separate contaminated outer layers from clean clothing and vehicles. Choose chemical compatibility before comfort; do not take contaminated PPE home loose.
