Correct technique
- Confirm the material specification, grade, dimensions and compatibility with the substrate or adjoining materials.
- Prepare, cut, mix, place, join or cure the material only within its stated temperature, moisture and timing limits.
- Use the correct fastener, adhesive, sealant, coating or joining system for the material pair and service conditions.
- Record batch/lot or product identity where traceability matters.
Handling
- Keep the material identified, dry/clean and protected from contamination, deformation, UV, frost or heat as applicable.
- Use safe lifting and edge protection for heavy, sharp, brittle or flexible stock.
Common problems
- Wrong grade, dimension or incompatible material combination
- Moisture, contamination, corrosion, ageing or expired shelf life
- Warping, cracking, delamination, poor bond or incorrect cure
- Damage during storage, transport or cutting
Injury risks
- Cuts, splinters, crushing or manual-handling injury from the material itself
- Dust, fibres, fumes, skin or eye exposure where the material or processing method creates them
- Chemical or fire risk where stated by the product safety information
What shortens service life
- Incorrect storage temperature or humidity
- UV, moisture, frost, corrosion or contamination
- Using incompatible chemicals, fasteners or joining materials
- Poor edge/seal protection or unfinished exposed surfaces
Care and maintenance
- Store to the manufacturer specification and use oldest suitable stock first.
- Keep packaging, labels and safety documentation with the material until use.
- Protect finished work with the required seal, coating, drainage, ventilation or maintenance regime.
